The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Frank A. Franchino, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 94th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Germany, on 4 March 1945. The high ground west of Darf, Germany, was subjected to a strong enemy counter-attack supported by tanks. The intensity of the attack was of such great force that the men were forced to seek alternative positions in the town. Disregarding his own personal safety, Private Franchino heroically held his post. Firing his rifle at point blank range, he killed many of the enemy, and was greatly instrumental in their complete disorganization and withdrawal. This enabled our troops to organize and drive the enemy from high ground protecting the bridgehead across the Saar River. Private Franchino’s gallantry, personal bravery, and supreme devotion to duty, are in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Army.
