The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Sergeant James H. Fowler (ASN: 6864632), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the *** Infantry Regiment, 83d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 15 July 1944, at ****, France. In the course of an attack by his company, intense enemy small arms and mortar fire prevented the evacuation of the wounded by litter. First Sergeant Fowler, with utter disregard for his personal safety, made five trips through the enemy fire carrying out the wounded on his shoulders. First Sergeant Fowler’s conspicuous humanity and outstanding personal courage reflect great credit upon himself and the finest traditions of the military service.
