Headquarters, 79th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 73 (May 10, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class James A. Ford (ASN: 39617649), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 314th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 23 September 1944, in France. A volunteer patrol, of which Private Ford was a member, found its area clear of enemy troops and took up a position in a trench to await the advance of the company. Shortly after approximately forty enemy infantry appeared moving toward the trench. The patrol fired on them immediately and in response the enemy quickly set up two machine guns and advanced under cover of this fire. Despite the intense enemy fire, Private Ford stood up when the enemy was almost within bayonet range, threw two hand grenades, and emptied his rifle into the group of enemy soldiers. His quick action and shouts of encouragement inspired the men with him to hold the position and insure the safe advance of their company. The daring courage and tenacity of purpose displayed by Private Ford reflect great credit on himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
