The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Donald V. Foncellino (ASN: 0-344602), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 258th Field Artillery Battalion (Separate), in support of the 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy during the period 19 September 1944 to 21 September 1944, in Holland. During this period preparations were under way for an offensive designed to break through fortified enemy positions. As a part of the preparations, Captain Foncellino directed effective pre-assault fires on fortified positions within the line. Four observation posts wee established by him successfully, inasmuch as enemy fire was so heavy that three of the four posts were destroyed soon after they had been established. Undaunted, Captain Foncellino brought the guns of his battery into position and proceeded to direct effective fires on the enemy installations. The accomplishment of these undertakings was done within a relatively short distance of numerous enemy fortified positions and in an area under hostile observation. The bravery, aggressive determination, and exemplary leadership exhibited by Captain Foncellino reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
