The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Barney Fodor (ASN: 16895841), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 350th Infantry Regiment, 88th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 16 October 1944, in the vicinity of San Clements, Italy. On this night, Private Fodor was a member of an important and daring combat patrol. After moving forward a short distance, the patrol was suddenly fired upon by four enemy machine guns. One enemy soldier fired a burst from a machine pistol at Private Fodor and wounded him seriously in the back. Exhibiting splendid courage and grim determination, Private Fodor refused to return to the aid station for treatment, after being advised to do so by his platoon medic and platoon leader. Instead, he joined in the fire fight that followed, and began to search for a concealed enemy machine gun nest. He crawled toward this position even though the enemy directed a withering hail of fire at him. When he had neared this machine gun, Private Fodor threw two grenades and killed three enemy soldiers manning the gun. The destruction of this machine gun position permitted the patrol to withdraw without sustaining any additional casualties. The significant courage and outstanding determination displayed by Private Fodor in the face of fierce enemy fire was an inspiration to those who fought with him, and reflects great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
