The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Technical Sergeant] Herbert D. Flynn (ASN: 0-2014903), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 20th Armored Infantry Battalion, 10th Armored Division, in action at Zerf, Germany, on 26 February 1945. Braving intense enemy artillery and machine gun fire, Second Lieutenant Flynn, then serving as Platoon Sergeant, courageously administered first aid to three wounded soldiers, and although wounded himself evacuated them to safety. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
