The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Walter F. Flint, Jr. (ASN: 0-517364), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 314th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 6 and 7 July 1944 in France. Lieutenant Flint assumed command of his company after all of the other officers were wounded. Although the company was badly shaken, his cool, unassuming manner spread confidence throughout the entire company and his exemplary courage in the ensuing engagement provided additional inspiration to the men as they successfully gained the objective. On the following day Lieutenant Flint again led his company into position. Just prior to the time for attack he was severely wounded when an enemy shell burst in the area. Although in great pain he refused evacuation until he had organized his company to such an extent that he was able to turn over his command to the ranking non-commissioned officer along with has plan for the attack. As a result of this action he was able to hold his company together as a fighting unit during a critical period. The great courage and superior leadership displayed by Lieutenant Flint reflect highest credit on himself and the armed forces of the United States.
