The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class William H. Fleming (ASN: 33379419), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action on 3 April 1945, in Germany. Private Fleming was on a patrol when sudden enemy fire wounded the officer in charge. Forcing two of the enemy to withdraw, he gallantly made his way along the shortest route possible to his company command post under a hail of fire. Private Fleming exposed himself again to lead a tank and a group of men to the rescue of the officer, thereby aiding greatly in saving his life. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Fleming, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
