The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private David E. Fleishman (ASN: 42187497), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 24 March 1945, in Germany. When a crossing boat developed motor trouble, the men were ordered to abandon the boat. One of the men, unable to swim, was rapidly being swept downstream when Private Fleishman jumped into the icy water and, despite the swift current and enemy fire falling around him, succeeded in pulling his comrade to safety. Private Fleishman’s outstanding courage and sacrifice in risking the treacherous currents saved his comrade’s life. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private Fleishman, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
