Charles Finley graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of January 1943. He was wounded on July 19, 1944, early in the Normandy invasion, but returned to his unit after recovery, and was subsequently killed in action as a U.S. Army First Lieutenant in August 1944.

    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Charles Robert Finley, Jr. (ASN: 0-25770), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 2d Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action during a voluntary reconnaissance mission in France, on 8 August 1944. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Finley, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
