The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Fred D. Finke, United States Army, for gallantry in action at Limon, Leyte, Philippine Islands, on 19 November 1944. On this day, elements of two companies and a platoon of reconnaissance troop were occupying a defensive position on Kilay Ridge. At about 0700 on that day the enemy attacked the perimeter with heavy rifle, machine gun and mortar fire and kept the perimeter under heavy fire continuously until 1500. By 1300, the supply of ammunition in the perimeter is almost expended. While under heavy fire, Private Finke left the perimeter and assisted in bringing up much needed ammunition to the perimeter. At 1500, while the company was repulsing the counterattack and when all available ammunition was need, Private Finke, without regard for his own personal safety, re-entered the perimeter while under heavy fire with ammunition for his men inside the perimeter. He was instantly killed by enemy rifle fire. Before he was killed he succeeded in delivering the ammunition in time to be used in repulsing the counterattack. His courageous act and devotion to duty is worthy of the highest tradition of the service.
