The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Eugene W. N. Roop (AFSN: 14158075), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with as Tail Gunner of a B-24 Liberator Bomber of the 506th Bombardment Squadron, EIGHTH Air Force, in action over Germany, on 11 April 1944. Staff Sergeant Roop’s bomber was heavily damaged and the order was given to abandon the airplane. Instead of jumping to safety, he assisted a helpless fellow crew member, and before he could parachute himself, the plane exploded. The Airman he had helped was one of three survivors. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Roop, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
