Warren Ferguson graduated from Mississippi College in Clinton, Mississippi, where he received a B.A. degree in 1936. He then attended the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary at Louisville, Kentucky, where he received his T.H.M. degree in 1939. After enlisting in the United States Army, he was commission as a chaplain and participated in the campaigns of Normandy and Northern France during World War II. Later transferring to the U.S. Air Force, in 1963 he was NINTH Air Force Staff Chaplain. He retired as an Air Force colonel after 22 years of active duty ministry and service.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Chaplain’s Corps) Warren Earl Ferguson, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as a chaplain with the 3d Armored Division, In action in the European Theater of Operations, on 14 August 1944. When the enemy loosed a heavy artillery barrage and inflicted numerous casualties upon our forces, Chaplain Ferguson, with complete disregard for his own personal safety and with full knowledge of the danger involved, rendered invaluable assistance to the medical officers and men in collecting and evacuating the wounded. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Chaplain Ferguson, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
