The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Joe G. Ferguson (ASN: 20454531), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 July 1944, in France. On that date, Private First Class Ferguson crawled forward over open terrain and through heavy enemy artillery and small arms fire, at times in plain view of the enemy, to administer first aid to a wounded comrade. His voluntary and courageous act performed at the risk of his life doubtlessly saved the life of a wounded soldier. The courage and loyalty to a fallen comrade shown by Private First Class Ferguson reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service.
