The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Frank B. Federico, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Italy, on 29 February 1944. When the Germans attacked his Infantry company positions on the morning of 29 February, Private Federico ignored machine pistol fire which missed his head by inches to throw hand grenades at the enemy who were 25 yards away. Although one German grenade landed within two feet of his hole, he threw it back at the enemy position where it went off effectively. After his supply of grenades was exhausted he crawled 50 yards through machine pistole fire to his platoon command post for more. Returning to his fighting hole he began throwing his remaining supply at the enemy and routed one group of Germans. He then jumped into the creek in front of his position, and engaged the remaining Germans with his rifle. In this skirmish he was wounded. When the enemy attack had been repulsed, two dead Germans were found in the foxholes into which he had been throwing his grenades. Private Federico’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
