The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Thomas Henderson Farnsworth (ASN: 0-25800), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as a Platoon Leader of an Infantry Company of the 3d Battalion, 313th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in France, on 24 June 1944. During an assault on an enemy hill position, when a first lieutenant of his company became momentarily confused due to the loss of its commander, Captain Farnsworth quickly regained control and rallied the men to the attack. He personally led reconnaissance squads into the forward areas and arranged for supporting tanks to proceed to the assault. At one juncture he mounted one of the tanks and directed it against an enemy pill box. Then he dismounted and led a platoon against the enemy strong point, neutralizing it. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Farnsworth, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
