Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 366 (October 2, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Harry S. Evans (ASN: 32486106), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 644th Tank Destroyer Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Germany. In the vicinity of Zeppenfeld, Germany, on 7 April 1945, Sergeant Evans successfully directed fire on a German self-propelled gun and through accurate and aggressive firing stopped an enemy tank column from overrunning infantry positions. His tank was stopped by a road block which the enemy had covered with withering machine gun fire and which was also being blanketed by intense mortar and artillery fire. Instead of withdrawing 400 yards around a hill where he would have been out of enemy observation and fire, he boldly remained in this exposed position while he directed fire at targets of opportunity with the result that one enemy self-propelled gun was destroyed. Enemy machine gun positions soon were silenced by his fire enabling the engineers to remove the road block and thus the armor was able to get through making the accomplishment of the objective possible. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Evans, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
