The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Charles D. Evans (ASN: 17040673), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 15 June 1944, in France. When his platoon was being held up by enemy machine gun fire, Staff Sergeant Evans, with courageous daring and utter disregard for his personal safety, voluntarily and alone charged forward firing point blank with his M-1 rifle at one of the hostile guns. As a result of this courageous act on the part of Staff Sergeant Evans, at the risk of his life, his entire platoon was inspired to the attack. They immediately charged forward, forcing the machine guns to displace to the rear, allowing the platoon to continue its mission. The heroic actions of Staff Sergeant Evans on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
