The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Corporal Harry Garland, United States Army, for gallantry in action with hostile Sioux on 7 May 1877, at Little Muddy Creek, Montana, while serving with Company L, 2d U.S. Cavalry. At Camas Meadows, Idaho, 20 August 1877, having been wounded in the hip so as to be unable to stand, Corporal Garland still continued to direct the men under his charge until the enemy withdrew.
