Headquarters, 88th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 42 (1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Julio Espinoza (ASN: 39688862), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 350th Infantry Regiment, 88th Infantry Division. Under an enemy artillery barrage which killed or wounded many of the men with him on 12 May 1944, in Italy, and with shells falling and exploding all about him, he worked desperately to save the lives of his comrades with no regard for his own personal safety. Despite the murderous fire laid down by the enemy, he walked freely about the battlefield to render immediate first aid to the wounded, thus saving an indeterminable number of lives. When the artillery fire ceased and snipers began to pick off any person who stirred or exposed himself, he continued to act without regard for his own life, moving from one wounded soldier to another, giving them life-saving first aid. The sniper’s bullet which brought him down took a truly courageous and self-sacrificing soldier from the service of the United States, upon which his voluntary and heroic action reflects the greatest possible credit.
