The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Chaplain’s Corps) John Edgar Ernst, United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as a Chaplain with Combat Command ***, 4th Armored Division, in action in France, on 7 August 1944. Chaplain Ernest, wounded by shrapnel while under heavy enemy artillery fire, calmly continued to administer the last rites to the dying and rendered first aid to those in need. Chaplain Ernst refused to take cover, and, with determined, spirted self-control, courageously moved from flaming vehicle to vehicle helping the wounded and assisting in their evacuation. With complete and utter disregard for his own safety, Chaplain Ernest continued his work until nearly all of the seriously wounded were cared for. Chaplain ErnestÕs steadfast, absolute, determined and zealous action, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
