The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Ivor L. Engel (ASN: 34147117), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 15 July 1944, in France. Private First Class Engel was assigned to duty with an infantry organization during an attack against the enemy, and was serving as squad leader of a light machine gun squad. Although wounded, Private First Class Engel refused to seek medical aid and continued to lead his squad through severe fighting for a considerable length of time until he became so weak from the pain and loss of blood that he was forced to give in.; His heroic actions, at a time when the support of his gun was of vital importance, he materially assisted in the successful capture of the objective by his unit. The personal bravery and unselfish conduct exhibited by Private First Class Engle reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
