The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Chaplain’s Corps) Paul Hilding Elmen (ASN: 0-528067), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as a Chaplain with an artillery unit with Headquarters, 6th Armored Division, in the vicinity of Ouderkirch, France, on 16 March 1945. With complete disregard for his own safety, Chaplain Elmen braved the danger of an enemy antipersonnel mine field to render medical and spiritual aid to an officer and three enlisted men. Although he suffered the loss of one of his feet, the comfort and welfare of the other injured personnel remained uppermost in his mind. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Chaplain Elmen, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
