The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private John L. Elam (ASN: 37460290), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the *** Infantry Regiment, 83d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 6 August 1944, near *****, France. When a platoon of his company was pinned down by heavy enemy mortar and small arms fire, Private Elam and another man crawled forward to a position where they could see about forty of the enemy. The other man with Private Elam exposed himself to the enemy and drewfire from an enemy officer commanding the position. Private Elam immediately arose and killed the enemy officer withy a shot between the eyes. Seeing their commander killed, the enemy soldiers surrendered forthwith. This daring action prevented many casualties and enabled the continuation of the attack. Private Elam’s outstanding bravery and initiative reflects great credit upon himself and the finest traditions of the military service.
