The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John K. Eide (ASN: 32650801), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 99th Infantry Battalion (Separate), attached to the 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 18 October 1944, in Germany. Private Eide was manning an outpost when an enemy force attacked. Due to the nature of the terrain, Private First Class Eide was unable to deliver effective fire from his position, and without hesitation, and in the face of heavy enemy machine gun and mortar fire, he exposed himself by crawling into the open. By firing his rifle with great skill, Private First Class Eide killed three of the approaching enemy and so demoralized the rest, that they withdrew. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Eide, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
