The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Hallett Daniel Edson, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, during action against the enemy on 26 January 1944, in France. Colonel Edson rallied and reorganized a company which had been counterattacked by German tanks. He led the company to its objective, exposing himself to small arms and artillery fire and joined them in the attack. His bravery and leadership were an inspiration to his men and resulted in a successful attack by the company. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Edson, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
