Headquarters, 79th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 71 (May 8, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Richard F. Eaton (ASN: 37623967), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 313th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 22 January 1945 in France. When his outpost became the focal point of an enemy attack, Sergeant Eaton, aided by nine other men immediately assumed positions in the window of a building to meet the oncoming attack. Although this group placed accurate rifle and automatic rifle fire on the hostile forces, the numerically superior enemy group was able to advance within close range. The enemy threw hand grenades into the building and brought bazooka fire to bear against the outpost position, setting the building afire. Unhesitatingly Sergeant Eaton called for supporting artillery fire and proceeded to adjust the fire on his own position. As a result of this fire and with the use of hand grenades Sergeant Eaton and his men were able to repulse the German attack causing the enemy many casualties. The leadership and steadfastness in the face of overwhelming odds displayed by Sergeant Eaton reflect great credit on himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
