Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 209 (November 3, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Cecil Duval (ASN: 35664028), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 19 December 1944, in Belgium. During a fierce engagement with the enemy, Staff Sergeant Duval, despite hazardous conditions, maintained communications at all times. He then directed the establishment of a defense of the battalion’s right flank. He directed the fire of his small group so effectively that every attempt to turn the flank was thwarted. Then spotting an enemy tank maneuvering into position, he made his way under severe fire until he contacted a tank destroyer. He then directed its fire, forcing the enemy tank to withdraw. Sighting two wounded men, Staff Sergeant Duval led them to a friendly tank, enabling them to be evacuated. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Duval, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
