Headquarters, 84th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 178 (1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Robert R. Durling (ASN: 39115177), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 84th Reconnaissance Troop Mechanized, 84th Infantry Division, in action in Germany, 24 – 28 November 1944. When half tracks were needed to evacuate mounting casualties during a bitter phase of combat in the Siegfried line, Technician Fifth Grade Durling, with another soldier, drove one of the vehicles to the location, despite withering enemy fire of all types. He then voluntarily exposed himself to the enemy fire and , for four successive days with little rest, assisted in the evacuation of wounded personnel. Technician Fifth Grade Durling lost his life on the fourth day while continuing this intrepid, unselfish action, when he fell victim to a near direct hit by enemy artillery fire. The courage, commendable conduct, and unswerving devotion to duty under perilous circumstances displayed by Technician Fifth Grade Durling reflect higher credit upon himself and the military service.
