The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal James W. Durgin (ASN: 36283454), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Anti-Tank Company, 301st Infantry Regiment, 94th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Germany. On 24 February 1945, during the assault crossing of the Saar River, a direct hit on the barge being used to ferry his anti-tank gun and crew caused it to flounder. Quickly jumping into the icy current, Corporal Durgin managed to keep the barge together until the far shore was reached. While performing this deed he was mortally wounded, but because of his courageous action the treacherous river crossing was made without other casualties or loss of equipment. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
