The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Melvin F. Durfey (ASN: 35548477), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company H, 28th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 13 July 1944, in the vicinity of Normandy, France. Although it was not his duty, Corporal Durfey exposed himself to intense enemy artillery fire by moving ab out on the battlefield, directing and assisting aid men in removing and administering first aid. While performing this courageous act he himself was hit several places but continued despite his wounds until he was forced to be evacuated. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
