The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Wilfred J. Dunn (ASN: 36543045), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 411th Infantry Regiment, 103d Infantry Division. On 15 March 1945 near Zinswiller, France, during an attack by the Second Battalion, 411th Infantry Regiment, Sergeant Dunn voluntarily returned to the rear to obtain additional wire when the supply was exhausted. Disregarding an intense artillery barrage, he made his way to the rear and when fired upon by three enemy soldiers in a well dug-in emplacement, he crawled four hundred yards to a point out of range. Reaching the battalion command post, Sergeant Dunn obtained the wire and securing the aid of two men started the return trip. Upon reaching the enemy emplacement from which he was fired upon, he immediately opened fire with his sub-machine gun, killing two of the enemy and wounding a third. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
