Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 128 (December 19, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant James P. Dunn (ASN: 20457920), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 4 October 1944, in Germany. Staff Sergeant Dunn was assigned as a Squad Leader at a time when a severe counterattack was launched by the enemy. Although he was exposed to heavy machine gun, rifle, and tank fire, he completely disregarded his own safety by moving among his men to encourage and exhort them to greater efforts, and to place them in strategic positions. During this heroic attempt to repulse the enemy thrust, Staff Sergeant Dunn was mortally wounded. His fearlessness and faithful devotion to duty, which resulted in the loss of his life, will remain as an example in the memories of his comrades. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Dunn, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
