The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class [then Private] William P. Duncan (ASN: 35141706), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 9 August 1944, in France. During an attack, due to intense fighting, the ammunition supply of the company was rapidly being depleted. Private First Class Duncan and a comrade, despite the fact that the road they were to travel was mined and under heavy fire, determined to supply the vitally needed ammunition. Obtaining the ammunition they drove to within three hundred yards of the front line and then proceeded to carry it on foot. After delivering the ammunition they spent three hours under enemy fire evacuating casualties to the rear. Private First Class Duncan’s gallant actions were of great aid to the success of this mission, and reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
