The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Paul W. Duncan (ASN: 39708198), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 315th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 3 July 1944 in France. Private Duncan was participating in an assault on an enemy hill position near Montgardon when he was critically wounded. Despite the pleas of his comrades that he fall back Private Duncan doggedly continued to advance until the enemy position was taken. An officer learned of his wounds and ordered his immediate evacuation to a medical aid station where he succumbed.
