The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Frank L. Dudley (Private), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 34th Infantry Division, with the FIFTH Army in Italy during World War II. When two enemy machineguns pinned his platoon down in an open field below its objective, Private Dudley followed his squad leader in a daring plan to relieve the situation. Charging straight for the machine gun emplacement, the two so startled the enemy they turned the full fury of their fire on them. Reaching a roadbed near the hostile position, Private Dudley and his companion opened fire with their automatic rifle and Tommy Gun. The platoon was able to maneuver into a position from which they were able to drive out the enemy gun crews with rifle grenades. The gallant action of Private Dudley and his comrade saved the platoon from suffering severe casualties and enabled them to continue the advance. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
