The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Conrad G. Ducote (ASN: 14010406), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 1st Armored Division, in action on 25 May 1944 in Italy. In the course of an attack on enemy objectives the two lead tanks of Sergeant Ducote’s company were knocked out by enemy fire and by enemy infantry employing anti-tank weapons. The disabled tanks were at once surrounded by an aggressive body of enemy infantry who prevented escape of surviving crew members of the evacuation of their wounded. Making a quick estimate of the situation, Sergeant Ducote exposed himself to direct enemy fire from assorted enemy arms by moving his tank into a position to cover escape and evacuation of the survivors. Though his own tank was surrounded on all sides by highly aggressive enemy infantry elements, Sergeant Ducote remained in position, and employing machine gun and 75j-mm. fire, saved eight of his comrades from certain death or capture. His courage, quick thinking and devotion to the welfare of his comrades reflects great credit upon himself and his command and deserves high praise.
