The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Earl Dryden (ASN: 33898998), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 315th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, inaction against the enemy on 24 March 1945, in Germany. One of the first to reach the east bank in the assault across the Rhine River Private Dryden jumped ashore under heavy fire from an enemy machine gun position which was cleverly concealed and fortified. Unhesitatingly and alone he assaulted the position and neutralized it with a hand grenade. Despite continuing fire from other, equally strong enemy positions, he set up his light machine gun and placed fire on the enemy so effectively that the friendly troops advancing around him were able to assault and overrun the emplacements. When the initial assault was assured success, Private Dryden was fatally wounded. The great courage and indomitable determination exhibited by Private Dryden reflect highest credit on himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
