Headquarters, 8th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 35 (1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Scott E. Drum, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 8th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in France, on 11 July 1944. In order to allow tanks to pass on the road leading to a town, it was necessary to clear the road of mines. Under enemy machine gun fire and without regard for his own safety, Sergeant Drum aided and directed his squad in clearing the road, making possible t he advance of the tanks. On the second day, Sergeant Drum led his squad in clearing a mile of road while under intense enemy sniper fire. This action made it possible to deliver ammunition to the front. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Drum, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
