The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Frank E. Douglas (ASN: 0-1296500), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the *** Infantry Regiment, 83d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 8 August 1944, at *****, France. An enemy machine gun position in a building succeeded in cutting the supply line to forward troops and prevented the evacuation of the wounded. Completely disregarding his own safety, Lieutenant Douglas took an automatic rifle and ran from doorway to doorway, firing at every opportunity until he reached a place close enough to throw a hand grenade into the enemy position and completely neutralize it. His heroic action opened the supply line and made possible the prompt evacuation of the wounded. The conspicuous courage and devotion to duty of this officer reflects great credit upon himself and the finest traditions of the military service.
