The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert D. Doolittle (ASN: 0-1310420), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 5th Armored Division, in action against the enemy in France, on 1 September 1944. Second Lieutenant Doolittle was riding in a one-quarter-ton truck behind the leading tank when the enemy opened fire and knocked out the lead tank. He pulled to the side of the road and while dismounting was wounded by small arms fire. He remained by his vehicle and radioed as much information as he had at that time to his commander. He then made a foot reconnaissance and returned to his vehicle in the face of enemy fire to radio additional information back at which time he was wounded again. Second Lieutenant Doolittle remained by his vehicle until support elements arrived in order to orient the support. Only then did he allow himself to be evacuated. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Second Lieutenant Doolittle, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
