Headquarters, 1st Armored Division, General Orders No. 17 (March 11, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Chaplain’s Corps) Edward T. Donahue, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as a Chaplain of a Combat Command with the 1st Armored Division, in Tunisia, on **** 1943. By previous reconnoitering of the command’s area, Chaplain Donahue had acquired thorough knowledge of the troop dispositions. This information was obtained under the most difficult conditions and with complete disregard for his own welfare. When the enemy attempted to overrun positions held by our forces, he personally drove the combat commander at night and through enemy shelling to the various units. The efforts and actions of Chaplain Donahue resulted in locating the various units and getting them into defensive positions, and as a result breaking up the attack of the enemy. The courage, bravery and efficiency displayed by Chaplain Donahue, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
