The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Joseph J. DiSalvo (ASN: 6863172), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 13 July 1944, in France. Private First Class DiSalvo gallantly exposed himself to enemy machine gun and rifle fire in remaining behind while two men withdrew with a rounded comrade who would otherwise have fallen into the hands of the enemy. Drawing the enemy fire to himself, he gained their attention long enough for his comrades to bring the wounded man to the rear. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class DiSalvo, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
