Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 128 (December 19, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Dominic C. Diego (ASN: 33233299), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 4 October 1944, in Germany. Private First Class Diego, serving as a rifleman, was engaged in close combat with elements of an infiltrating enemy force. A grenade fell in his foxhole and exploded, injuring him seriously. Remaining fully conscious, Private First Class Diego lay in his foxhole for four hours with no medical aid of any kind without making a sound that would give away his unit’s position to the enemy. When dawn came Private First Class Diego was discovered by medical aidmen and removed to a nearby house. But his eagerness to continue the fight was not quenched, for he pleaded with his comrades to move him to a window where he could fire on the enemy. Private First Class Diego later died of his wounds, but his outstanding courage and indomitable fighting spirit remain an inspiration to the men of his unit. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Diego, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
