The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Helmer H. Dewey (ASN: 0-1321295), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 25 July 1944, in France. Lieutenant Dewey was assigned to duty as leader of an infantry platoon advancing along a hedgerow. The assault was suddenly brought to a standstill by murderous enemy small arms fire from an adjoining field. Sacrificing his own safety, Lieutenant Dewey dashed into the enemy-held field and single-handedly he engaged the enemy. As a result of this skirmish, Lieutenant Dewey captured a machine gun nest, inflicted casualties on the enemy and took eleven prisoners. This conspicuous gallantry and aggressive determination exhibited by Lieutenant Dewey reflect great credit on himself and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces.
