Headquarters, 83d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 26 (August 15, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class James M. Dean (ASN: 35339714), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 83d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 8 July 1944, near ****, France. Private First Class Dean, while serving as a litter bearer at an advanced collecting station, answered a call for medical help from an adjacent unit which was being shelled by enemy artillery. In the face of intense enemy artillery fire he steadfastly continued to aid the wounded, with utter disregard for his own safety, and voluntarily remained at his post until the last man had been treated and evacuated from the area. Private First Class Dean’s unflinching courage, staunch devotion to duty, and coolness under fire, reflect great credit upon himself and the military service of the United States.
