The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technical Sergeant Howard Eugene Deadman (ASN: 38272775), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 August 1944, in France. When intense enemy machine gun fire pinned his company down, Technical Sergeant Deadman took the initiative and by fire and movement worked his way toward the emplacement where he drove the gunner from his weapon and put the gun out of action with hand grenades. Technical Sergeant Deadman later moved across fifty yards of open terrain to capture one of the enemy. His outstanding courage and aggressiveness were important contributions to the success of his company it its attack. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technical Sergeant Deadman, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
