Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 79 (April 12, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Richard E. Davis (ASN: 42014878), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 743d Tank Battalion (Separate), attached to the 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 26 February 1945, in Germany. When Corporal David and his Company Commander were about t o fire at the enemy, their tank was penetrated by an armor piercing bullet, setting it on fire. Since his Company Commander was severely wounded by the same round and was unable to move, Corporal Davis ignored the ammunition which might explode at any moment and removed his commander from the tank and carried him to the safety of a ditch. Despite the enemy fire falling in the area, he remained with his Company Commander, dressing his wounds and making him as comfortable as possible until aid men arrived. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Corporal Davis, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
