The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Richard Calvin Davis (ASN: 39320903), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 5 October 1944, in Holland. Sergeant Davis was serving as an assistant squad leader with an infantry company advancing in an effort to capture an enemy town. When his comrades were threatened with enemy fire from a hidden position, Sergeant Davis courageously advanced alone, firing directly into the enemy position, although it meant subjecting himself to the enemy fire. By his aggressive endeavors, the enemy were forced to evacuate their position and his company was able to continue its advance. Sergeant Davis’ courageous deed undoubtedly averted numerous casualties within the ranks of his company, although he lost his life as a result of wounds received while performing his mission. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Davis, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
