The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Charles R. Davis (ASN: 35567892), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 24 March 1945, in Germany. Staff Sergeant Davis, a machine gun section leader, crossed the Rhine River wit h his company in assault crafts. After forming on the east bank, the platoon suffered eleven casualties from an enemy artillery concentration. With complete calmness and outstanding leadership, Staff Sergeant David reorganized the platoon into one section. Then, taking complete charge of the section, he led his men to deliver excellent supporting fire for the attacking riflemen. Staff Sergeant Davis’ resourcefulness and bold leadership of a group of men who might otherwise have become badly disorganized, was a vital factor in the success of the mission. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Davis, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
